Newsletter Campaigns

A newsletter campaign is basically the act of putting together and sending out emails to a targeted group of recipients. The content would differ based on the group targeted and may or may not require monitoring for statistics and information regarding effectiveness. Common uses of newsletters campaigns include sending out information and updates for clients, sales and marketing promotions, news and account information.

Emailing can be done from a standard email account using BCC (blind carbon copy) to send to multiple recipients or through the use of third party applications such as icontact or constant contact. Business websites by damodo designs include the ability to integrate a newsletter module for managing newsletter campaigns without any additional monthly fees.

Technical aspects: There are two basic types of emails, those which are coded in HTML and can include images in the body as well as styles, tables and other coded items and plain text emails. In either version receipents should be given the option to opt out.

Business benefits: Share information and market goods and services.

Negatives: Can be considered spam, may not be read, may get flagged or blocked.  Often misused by companies to send out unsolicited materials. Can cause your website SMTP server ip address to receive negative reputation status or be banned from sending mail to some servers.

Getting Started

  1. Categorize your newsletters by type, such as sales, business updates, etc.
  2. Create a spreadsheet of email addresses relevant to each type of newsletter.
  3. Create the individual emails in plain text first.
  4. Create visually appealing images and banners for each email type.

Physically create the emails in your email program, make sure to include a link in the email for those interested in opting out of your newsletter list. If you are not using a newsletter manager which will allow you to include both the plain and HTML version of your email then it would be advised to send out a plain text email rather than an HTML email because all recipients will be able to view your email.

More complex newsletter programs would normally include an interface that you can use to create categories and schedule newsletter blasts. You can manage your subscribers and get creative with built-in templates (for most applications). Depending on what service you use you may also have the ability to track whether or not subscribers opened the emails you send.
